Ntchisi – East Coffee Growers Cooperative Society Limited started on 28th July, 2010 as a Pre-Cooperative group. The Cooperative was formed to facilitate production, processing and marketing systems of coffee and honey. It was primarily formed as an exit strategy of Kulera Biodiversity Project (a three year project (2009 – 2012) implemented by Total Land Care (Malawi) in partnership with Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Limited. The Project targeted communities that are within 10 kilometer boarder zone around the perimeter of Ntchisi Forest Reserve with the aim of improving governance of the forest and ensure that natural resources are sustainably exploited. The project emphasized on promoting coffee production as a main crop.

The Cooperative has registered a number of achievements since it started. A total of 571,798 coffee seedlings have been planted in coffee fields. Number of farmers has also risen from 110 old farmers to 450. A total of 8 Business Zones and 30 centers have so far been formed. Cherry production has also steadily increased from 2.0, 4.2, 7.5, 11.0 and 16.5 metric tons in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively. The upward movement of cherry production has an obvious resultant increase of household income from coffee sales.
